Get Gardening – Design and Garden Planning – Zone Maps

The two zone maps we offer here can be valuable aids for plant selection and garden planning. The plant hardiness zone map is the one most people associate with gardening, but the Canadian ecozones map can also be helpful for determining the native vegetation and wildlife associated with your geographic area.

Get Gardening - Getting Started - Soil Care

Soil is, of course, the foundation of any garden and must be attended to as carefully as plant and animal life. Get to know the soil conditions in the different areas of your yard and select plants that prefer each soil type. Better to do the research before you plant than to spend many months struggling to make an unsuitable plant prosper in the wrong soil.

Read more about soil care in this selection of articles contributed by gardening experts.

Got pests? Strengthen your lawn
Extensive insect damage is often a sign of an unhealthy lawn. Apply the methods outlined for mowing, watering, fertilizing, and general maintenance. Your encounters with problem insects should lessen to an acceptable level.

Get Gardening - Garden Care – Mulching

Each year, nature provides a blanket of mulch. While the leaves of deciduous trees are a fairly obvious ground covering each fall, there are many other natural “mulches.” Evergreen needles are also shed yearly. Grasses die back and their debris, along with that of perennials and annuals, covers the ground, only to be replaced by fresh growth in the spring.

Get Gardening - Garden Care – Mulching – Basics

Suppressing weeds

A five-to-eight centimetre (two-to-three inch) layer of mulch will
prevent light from reaching the soil surface. This will stop small
weeds from emerging and prevent weed seeds from germinating. Weeds that
germinate on the surface of the mulch are easily removed by hand. Some
weeds, such as dandelions and thistles, have enough energy in their
roots to push through a layer of mulch. Ensure that these types of
weeds are removed entirely before placing mulch on a bed.
